Free the Air - Aerocene : 다르게 비행하기, 에어로센

Speaker’s note

앞으로 10년이 지난 뒤에도 여전히 화석연료를 활용한 비행을 고집할까. 다른 방법으로 날 수 없을까. 토마스 사라세노의 ‘에어로센(Aerocene)’의 출발은 바로 이 지점이다. 공기, 바람, 태양의 힘 만으로 하늘을 나는 것. 사라세노는 커뮤니티 구축, 과학 연구, 예술 체험, 교육 등을 전담하는 비영리 단체인 에어로센 재단(2015~)을 통해 참여를 원하는 모든 이에게 하늘 위의 시대를 열어주고 있다. 126개국에서 탄소 없는 비행을 6,700분동안 진행하며, 33개의 뮤지오 에어로 솔라(Museo Aero Solar) 프로젝트를 통해 환경 및 대기와의 윤리적 콜라보레이션 위한 상상력을 재활성화 시켰던 경험을 통해, 우리 앞의 미래는 지금의 선택에 따라 바뀔 수 있음을 생각해본다.

 

Biography

토마스 사라세노는 아르헨티나 출신으로 독일 베를린에 거주하며 작품활동을 하고 있다. 건축학, 환경학, 천체물리학, 공학, 생명과학, 항공 엔지니어링 등을 예술에 접목시키는 아티스트이자 인류가 살아갈 미래도시, 환경과 기후문제 등을 고민하는 건축가이기도 하다.  2002년 베니스건축비엔날레로 등장해 2009년 베니스비엔날레에 참가해 대규모 설치작업으로 이름을 알리기 시작했으며, 같은 해 NASA 국제 스페이스 프로그램을 참여하고, 칼더 프라이즈를 수상하기도 했다. 2012년 미국 MIT 레지던스 프로그램을 진행한 첫 미술가가 되며, 2014-2016년 독일의 브라운슈바이크공과대학의 디렉터를 역임한다. 2019년 랄프 루고프가 감독을 맡은 베니스비엔날레 본전시에 참여해 ‘The Spider/Web Pavilion 7: Oracle Readings, Weaving Arachnomancy, Synanthropic Futures: At-ten(t)sion to invertebrate rights!’, ‘Aero(s)cene: When breaths air, when atmosphere become the movement for a post fossil fuel era against carbon-capitalist clouds’를 출품한 바 있다.

 

Tomás Saraceno is an Argentinian contemporary artist based in Berlin, Germany. His practice is informed by concepts linking art, life science, and the social sciences to explore new, sustainable ways of inhabiting and sensing the environment. Saraceno’s first installations were exhibited at the Venice Biennale of Architecture in 2002 and again in 2009, he exhibited his large-scale installation in the 53rd Venice Biennale. He won the Calder Prize and that same year, he also participated in the International Space Studies Program at NASA Center Ames. Saraceno has collaborated with MIT Center for Art, Science & Technology and serves as a director at Technische Universitat Braunschweig from 2014 to 2016. In 2019, he was invited at the 58th Venice Biennale by Ralph Rugoff, and exhibited ‘The Spider/Web Pavilion 7: Oracle Readings, Weaving Arachnomancy, Synanthropic Futures: At-ten(t)sion to invertebrate rights!’, and ‘Aero(s)cene: When breaths air, when atmosphere become the movement for a post fossil fuel era against carbon-capitalist clouds’.
